Book a free discovery call

Let's get to know each other! During this complimentary, no-obligation call, we'll discuss your health concerns, nutrition goals, and what you're hoping to achieve. Whether you're looking to improve your cholesterol, manage blood sugar, support metabolic health, or work toward sustainable weight loss, we'll explore how personalized nutrition counseling can help. I'll walk you through my approach, answer your questions, and explain what working together would look like, including how I can collaborate with your physician when appropriate.

Initial Consultation (60 Min)

This is where we take a deeper look at your health. During our comprehensive initial consultation, we'll review your medical history, recent lab work, medications, current eating habits, lifestyle, physical activity, sleep, stress, and both your short- and long-term health goals. Together, we'll identify areas for improvement and develop an individualized, evidence-based nutrition plan that fits your lifestyle and supports your medical needs. You'll leave with a clear understanding of where to start, practical recommendations, and actionable steps to begin making meaningful, sustainable changes.

Follow-Up Sessions (45 Min)

Lasting improvements in health come from consistent, sustainable habits, not restrictive diets or quick fixes. Follow-up sessions give us the opportunity to evaluate your progress, review changes in symptoms or lab markers, address challenges, and refine your nutrition plan as your needs evolve. Whether we're working to improve cardiovascular risk factors, support blood sugar management, or maintain progress with weight loss, our focus is on building realistic habits that work for you. There's no predetermined schedule or package commitment. You can book sessions as needed, with ongoing support available by email or phone for brief questions between appointments.

OUR APPROACH

We believe that sustainable health begins with the habits we build daily. Our approach blends evidence-based nutrition education with behavioral science to create lasting change. We focus on metabolic health, cardiovascular risk reduction, and blood sugar balance through a personalized, education-focused lens.

We don't believe in one-size-fits-all solutions or rigid meal plans. Instead, we take a comprehensive approach that bridges conventional and functional nutrition, looking beyond individual symptoms to understand the factors influencing your health. By considering your lab results, medical history, lifestyle, and daily habits, we develop practical, individualized strategies that address your unique needs. Our goal isn't simply to tell you what to eat, but to help you understand the *why* behind your nutrition choices, empowering you with the knowledge and tools to support your health for years to come.

Before I became a registered dietitian, I was the person trying to follow rigid plans and push through exhaustion because I thought health was just about “working hard.” I worked with an online coach who had all of the confidence but none of the credentials (which I didn’t learn until later), and her poor advice left me about where you’d expect: undernourished, overtrained, and completely feeling worse than I did before meeting her.

It took years of my life and lots of unlearning to understand how much nuance real nutrition requires, especially for people managing health conditions like chronic illness, cardiovascular risk, metabolic concerns, or a generally complicated relationship with food.

Today, my work as a dietitian looks much different from the strict, one-size-fits-all coaching I trusted back in college. I don’t subscribe to the extremes or templated programs we see on social media, and I certainly don’t assume that simply “trying harder” is the answer. I want to help you understand what’s really going on in your body, and build something sustainable from there.

I’ve seen what extreme nutrition can do, and I’m not interested in putting you through that.

Hi, I’m Karen, MS, RD, CDN, IFNCP

Common Questions:

Do you take insurance?

Health By Habit is a private-pay practice. This means your care isn't shaped by coverage limitations or what insurance deems "medically necessary." Flexible payment plans are available, and many clients find that the depth and efficiency of the work makes it more cost-effective than ongoing trial and error.

What’s the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

Great question! A registered dietitian (AKA, me) is a credentialed health professional with formal training, licensure, certification, continuing education credits, and a code of ethics to honor.

“Nutritionist” isn’t a regulated term, which means anyone (including those without a license, certification, or formal education) can call themselves one. Unfortunately, this often leads to misinformation and unsafe practices that can put people’s health at risk.

Do you work with people who are on GLP-1s?

Yes. I frequently work with clients managing weight, obesity, or metabolic conditions while on GLP-1 medications. Your full medication picture is always factored into your plan — including nutrient considerations, muscle preservation, and long-term outcomes.

It's time to understand your health at a deeper level.
